SHANDAKEN DAY
Shandaken Day evolved from the Town of Shandaken’s Bicentennial Celebration in 2004. Since it’s inception Shandaken Day has been promoted as a day to explore everything that makes Shandaken a great place to visit and live. The day of the event boasts fifty vendors, LIVE music, a variety of food vendors, a fire department Tug-o-War and a multitude of Kids Games (including the crowd favorite watermelon-eating contest). We also take this opportunity to recognize local notables for leaving a positive lasting impression on our community with the Pride of Shandaken and Hamlet Hero Awards. Over the years the event has moved to different locations to highlight each of the twelve hamlets that comprise Shandaken.
So far Shandaken Day has been hosted by the following communities:
Mt. Tremper, Mt. Pleasant, Phoenicia, Allaben, Shandaken, Bushnellsville, Big Indian, Oliverea and Pine Hill.
This year’s event is slated for Saturday, August 27, 2011 from 10 am – 6pm in the Parish Field in Phoenicia. Along with Phoenicia, we are celebrating the hamlets of Chichester and Woodland Valley. Timing couldn’t be better as this year Phoenicia was voted the (6th) Coolest Small Town in America 2011 by Budget Travel Magazine. It is also the 25th anniversary of the Eagle being dedicated at the entrance to Phoenicia. We’ll discuss the history of the Chichester Chair factory and hand blown glass. We’ll also expose all of the recreational assets from Woodland Valley and the immediate area.
